Construction of a de Montfort medical waste incinerator

Medical waste incinerator for rural clinics

Vegetable fields on a Freetown waste disposal site

Sierra Leone is one of least developed countries in the world! Functioning waste management is virtually not existing almost throughout the country. Disposal sites do only exist in the countries capital and some bigger towns. The management of waste in health care facilities is shocking. Needles, high contagious bandages and organic parts occurring in OTs' are usually just disposed in a hole beside the wards.

Global Win worked in Sierra Leone on different areas. Three low cost waste incinerators and proper disposal-sites were built in three government hospitals. Also waste separation schemes were introduced and local staff was trained in using the improved system. In several rural clinics functioning waste burning sites ensuring that hazardous waste is burned and disposed safely were constructed.
